My Family Pedigree
Introduction
Hello and welcome to my genealogical web site. My name is Mark Douglas Browning and I live near Tucson, Arizona. My ancestors migrated to America from Germany, East Prussia, South Wales, England, Ireland, and Scotland. Some of these ancestors married Native Americans (Chickasaw and Cherokee). Below is further information regarding the specifics of my pedigree.
Overview
Maternal Grandfather:
Descended from the Carby and Hunt families of Grayson, Hardin, and Hart Counties in Kentucky along with the Muss, Hopewell, and Foster families of Bullitt County, Kentucky. The Carby family was originally from Virginia. The patriarch of the Carby family, Jesse Carby, was a soldier in the Revolutionary War while a citizen of Virginia. Jesse Carby and Jesse Brock (see below) served in the same regiment. It is believed that the Carby family originally immigrated from from England or Scotland depending upon the initial spelling of the surname. The Muss family was originally from East Prussia (now part of Russia). The patriarch of the Muss family, John Muss, immigrated from Schuschkehmen, East Prussia to Bullitt County, Kentucky about 1847. I have been unable to find any of the original immigration records for the Muss family. The Foster family was originally from New York, and first moved briefly to New Orleans, Louisana then later settled in Bullitt County, Kentucky.
Maternal Grandmother:
Descended from the Gross, Cooper, Brock, Simpson, Saylor, and Salyer families of Harlan County, Kentucky as well as the Griffith family of Whitley and Bell County, Kentucky in addition to the Lloyd family of Jackson County, Ohio. Enoch Theodore Griffith immigrated to Jackson County, Ohio from Wales via Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on 25 Sep 1864 aboard the steamer ship Erin with his mother, older brother, and younger sister. The Gross, Brock, Simpson, and Salyer families were some of the original settlers to the Harlan County, Kentucky area. It is believed that the Gross family originally immigrated from Germany. The patriarch of the Brock family, Jesse Brock, was a soldier in the Revolutionary War while a citizen of Virginia. Jesse Carby (see above) and Jesse Brock served in the same regiment. The Cooper and Evans families were originally from Campbell and Union County, Tennessee before moving to Harlan County, Kentucky. The Griffith family was originally from Monmouthshire, South Wales and immigrated to Jackson County, Ohio via the Steamer Ship Erin from Liverpool, England to New York, New York in 1864. The Lloyd family was originally from Boston, Massachusetts and later moved to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania before settling in Jackson County, Ohio. It is believed that the Lloyd family originally immigrated from England.
Paternal Grandfather:
My paternal great grandfather was a Shupe/Shoop from Southwestern Virginia. My paternal grandfather descended from the Shupe/Shoop, Ferguson, and Lanter families of Wythe County, Grayson County, Scott County and Wise County, Virginia. Additionally, my paternal grandfather also descended from the Browning family of Hawkins County, Tennessee and later Scott County and Wise County, Virginia and even later Harlan County, Kentucky. It is believed that the Shupe family originally immigrated from Germany. I believe that the Browning roots originally descend from the Browning's of Russell County, Virginia and later of Lee County, Virginia (Dr. James Gibson Browning and Martha Anne Farley). Unfortunately, I have been unable to find proof of this connection. It is believed that the Browning family originally immigrated from England. Finally, my paternal grandfather descended from the Looney family of Hawkins County, Tennessee.
Paternal Grandmother:
Descended from the Craig and Delk families of Whitley County, Kentucky and Campbell County, Tennessee. Additionally, descended from the Craig and Williams families of Union County, Tennessee along with the Fox family of Campbell County, Tennessee and Whitley County, Kentucky. Finally, descended from the Lawson family of Whitley County, Kentucky. The Craig family appears to be original settlers of the Union County, Tennessee area. The patriarch of this side of the Delk family, Gilbert Ancil Delk, was a soldier in the Civil War and fought for the Union side. Gilbert was captured near Rogersville, Tennessee by Confederate forces and died while a prisoner of war. The original Delk immigrant, Roger Delk, immigrated from Surrey County, England to Surrey County, Virginia in the late 1620s or early 1630s.
